Designed for active music listeners who work and play hard, the Philips PSA232 MP3 player stores up to 128 MP3s or 256 WMA files in a round and robust body that holds up to heavy use. The player's controls are built on a "no-look" rocking lens, which provides discreet and easy access to multiple functions without disrupting your workouts. Simply tap on the guiding points of the rocking lens--all of which are marked with a small bump for convenience--to play songs, skip, adjust the volume, and perform a host of other tasks, all without glancing at the player. It's great for jogging, snowshoeing, stair stepping, and any other on-the-go activity.

Songs are stored on the player's 512 MB of built-in memory, which is teamed with a mini Secure Digital (SD) card slot for expandability. By itself, the player holds around 15 hours of music, but thanks to the memory card slot, the MP3 player's capacity is restricted only by the number of SD cards you own. Another nice bonus is the ID3 tag support, which reads the album title, artist name, and track title from encoded MP3s and transfers them to the backlit 96 x 64 LCD display.

The PSA232 is no slouch from an audio perspective, either. The unit's digital bass boost pumps up the low-frequency response for a fuller overall sound, while the multiple equalizer settings (R&B, rock, hip-hop, classic, and jazz) deliver several listening options based on genre or personal taste. Should you tire of MP3s and want to catch a favorite music or news show, turn to the FM tuner, which not only picks up the entire FM spectrum (87.5 to 108 MHz) but also includes 10 station presets for easy channel surfing.

And no sport MP3 player is complete with a built-in stopwatch. This particularly model includes a talking stopwatch, which relays elapsed running time through the headphones. No need to look at the display, or even turn off the music for that matter. To activate the stopwatch, simply press the strategically positioned button on the top left of the player. It's that simple.

The device is compatible with PCs running Windows XP and includes a copy of Windows Media Player 10. It also requires a free USB port, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, and a sound card to function properly. And at 2.5 by 1.04 by 2.5 inches (W x H x D), it takes up only a tiny amount of space. Not the best choice November 3, 2008
It's a shame that this mp3 has an incredible poor battery life, because the radio is nice and it has some cool features and design.
The battery hardly lasts 3 hours, that's why I give it only 2 stars.

Pure Disappointment April 6, 2008
This mp3 has been pure disappointment. I have gone through so many batteries that I could have probably purchased an ipod by now. Even with the high quality Energizer Lithium batteries, it doesn't last long. The arm band also fell apart on me, with the plastic piece breaking off. The mp3 player came with no written instructions, all inquiries have to be read online. I have also had problems with the player not saving music that I download onto it. It will show it while it is hooked up to my computer, then when I leave for a run and turn on the mp3 player...nothing. This has happened to me right as I was ready to run a half marathon. I was all pumped up because I just loaded it with a bunch of new songs and the mp3 player showed that I had nothing on it. I couldn't use the radio because there are no stations that come in. When the mp3 player did function, it was easy to navigate and adjust the volume quickly. I also liked the size of the mp3 player. As of late, I can not even get the player to load anything. It's like it crashed on me, even when I select the repair feature with the software it came with. Currently, I am on the lookout for something that can be easily recharged versus having to take batteries.

Stoped working after 2 months. I only used the radio and liked the presets. However it now has a demon and when you plug in the head phones it turns off or does weird scanning. But it doesn't work. It also used a Battery every four hours or so I bought rechargables but it was to much of a hassle.

Pros:
Great design for the gym
Good radio reception
Built-in stopwatch
Very inexpensive

Cons:
Bad battery life
Only compatible for sync with WMP 10 (not the newest)
Very difficult to add a play list

Overall, I like it just because of the great design and ease of use while exercising. This MP3 player is the reason why I started using rechargeable batteries.

Hmmmm...I wish I would have held out August 11, 2007

I am like one of the other reviewers. I wanted to like this mp3 player but it is so terrible. I wish I would have held out for the Sony or Ipod. I bought this because it was on the cheaper side and I thought Philips would have been a good brand to have.It works sometimes and this is the longest it has been that it hasn't worked at all. The radio worked but I can't play any of the files I have on it. It is by no means user friendly. The instruction manual is not helpful at all. Anyway, I know I have gotten long winded but I would definitely recommend that you not buy this device.
