The WS-310M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of four recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for recording people with low speaking voices; LP and SP modes that offer extended recording times; and the unique Stereo HQ mode, which makes two-channel recordings. Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-310M to a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, you can download music files, images, or documents, in effect turning the recorder into a small hard drive, or you can transfer voice recordings to your computer for storage or multimedia use.

The unit also offers built-in WOW sound enhancement to produce rich, three-dimensional audio with a nice bass component. Additional audio improvements include a user-selectable equalizer that lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment, along with Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology, which makes the audio even clearer by removing unwanted hiss and background noise. You can even adjust the built-in stereo microphone's recording level to meet your needs.

Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback, random play, and repeat play. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.

Great gadget for teachers, motivational speakers, business meetings, presentations, etc. November 7, 2008
As I said before, I'm not a tech-expert so I don't know if this product is any better than others technically speaking. That said, I think this is a great gadget to have if you are a teacher like me who wants a voice recording of classes and presentations. The quality is actually very good and the 512MB memory is really plenty even if you record in HD. The battery life isn't great (maybe a couple hours), it doesn't even last to fill up the memory stick that is incorporated. I've used it many times and I think it always worked fine.
It's easy to use and it's super-easy to download the audio files onto your computer from the memory stick.
The best part is that it's MAC-compatible!!!

Look at your other options. The 331-M is less expensive and has more memory. It is a newer version.

This little gizmo is absolutely great! It does all the things I wanted it to & more. I use it for recording choral rehearsals, then downloading to my computer, & sending off files to other members of the chorus through email, or burning CDs. GREAT TOOL!!!!

I personally don't like that format since I work with audio a lot (I like wav or mp3). But I couldn't find anything else that would record a long period of time that wasn't VERY expensive. So I just went with this. It worked great for what I have used it for:

College classes
Kidnapping a friend and taking him to his birthday party
A political conversation among friends.
Self-dictation
Band concert (tweeked in audio program and came out nicely)

It has two microphone sensitivities ( Dictation [low] and Conference[high]).
I have normally use it on the HQ stereo setting and I have been quite pleased with the stereo recording. For the more technological people - I have imported the files into a audio editing program and the wave images do appear in stereo. It also has a microphone jack that I have yet to try, but I know that Olympus sells a lapel microphone for it, but I am also going to try on of mine as well.

Durability: 4/5 - held up well unless I dropped it, then the USB cover came off
Ease of Use: 4/5 - Menu screens are fairly easy to navigate and the USM is "plug & play" it acts as an external hard drive.
Battery Life: 4/5
Sound Quality: 4/5
Portability: 5/5 Very lite.

Overall: 4/5

Also I didn't use the music player side of it...that's what my iPod is for.

I think everything about this recorder is great . . . with one exception, the bulge in the back from the battery. I just hate it. The recorder is, well could be, remarkably thin, but that battery makes it me crazy. With all the battery types available today, why would Olympus choose the AAA size. I guess I'm being too picky about something so insignificant, but it just bothers me. There are many good qualities about this product. I especially like its USB connection. Regarding the size, I find it more than adequate for voice recording. I seem to have loads of space. I suppose if I was using it for music I would want more space. But for my needs, I am quite satisfied with this product.

Update 19 Apr 08 ... Now I am fed-up with that battery design solution. I came to find out that the cover does not stay on very well, in fact so not very well that it popped off, I cannot find it and now I am stuck with an exposed battery that enjoys popping out as much as the cover did. I tried giving it two stars, but I cannot edit the stars. Arg.
