1 out of 5 stars Very poorly designed -- not functional   April 13, 2007

My son got this for Christmas -- what a disappointment. The "stars" are black dots and the print is illegible unless right next to the wall (which is NOT what the instructions recommend). Discovery may want to actually TEST their product before passing it off on unsuspecting consumers! Ours is going back.

1 out of 5 stars Sorely Disappointed   February 19, 2007

I agree with the other reviewers for the most part - this item is sub-par. I can see how it may be acceptable in a limited way like with the tent, but in a room, the way it's supposed to be used, the stars are blurry grey dots and the constellation names are unreadable if the unit is more than a few feet or so from a wall. Most kids rooms are going to be too large to make this work. It certainly fell well below my expectation for a "National Geographic" endorsed toy. They should SERIOUSLY reconsider selling their name to this junk. (I also bought the walkie talkies which were awful, and the metal detector which I didn't open after the first two items were obvious failures. All three are GOIN' BACK!)

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly what we thought it was..   January 9, 2007

This home planetarium doesn't have the clarity in a room that we thought it would. To get a good focus on the ceiling, it needs to be fairly close to it (not at child level). However, we discovered that it works great in a tent. My kids are all the time setting up tents in the living room to play in and the planetarium works great in it. The bulb blew almost immediately, but there was a spare included in the box. It's been fine since.

4 out of 5 stars Works for us!   January 9, 2007

The images were not too clear, although the children liked it and we were able to show them what the constellations looked like.

4 out of 5 stars my son likes it   December 6, 2006

We compared this one to the National Geographic brand from Target. It is pretty much the same except the National Geographic one is $10 less. It is not what I would have expected but very much what my 6 year old wanted. He loves it. He can't really read the big names anyway so he doesn't care that the words are a bit blurry. We were dissapointed that the "stars" were black dots, but once again, my son really enjoys looking at the "stars" while laying in bed. He knows to be gentle with it while turning the "sky" and so far it remains intact. For $20 (national geographic) it seems to make him happy. I guess I'd rather spend the money on something like this than some other toy that would have gone forgotten by now.
